Nearly all the consumer grade routers/firewalls are riddled with security holes that rarely get patched. If you were to argue you are taking all these steps in order to learn something, fine, have at it.

It's a fantastic piece of software with a multitude of uses, but at that level, you move into a different league. But for practicality, any network that would require a RADIUS setup has no business running Untangle, imo. If it's for educational purposes, see the paragraph following this one. Other great apps like Untangle are OpenWrt (Free, Open Source), pfSense (Free, Open Source.

The best alternative is DD-WRT, which is both free and Open Source. Most alternatives are Firewalls and VPN Services. Usually you’re going to have it be your router/firewall/gateway, so you’ll configure the WAN connection type, internal IP and DHCP server. You can use it either as your main router/firewall/gateway, or in bridged model (transparent proxy) behind your existing firewall. If you set it up correctly, you won't even have any traffic flowing during those 5 seconds (or however long a reboot takes, probably longer, but it's still not anything of consequence) anyway. There are more than 10 alternatives to Untangle for a variety of platforms, including Linux, Windows, Self-Hosted solutions, Mac and BSD. You get to select your login credentials and how you want to use Untangle.
